History through Literature – Medieval Time Period

Sharing is caring!

Last week, we discussed how to learn history through literature. I listed several book recommendations for ancient times. Today, we will continue this conversation with book recommendations for medieval times. Like last week, I am focusing on less know titles, not on classics that you can easily find elsewhere.

  • Chengli and the Silk Road Caravan by Hildi Kang is set in 7th century China. It’s a great adventure story about a thirteen year old orphan traveling with a caravan along the Silk Road.
  • The Apple and the Arrow by Mary and Conrad Buff is a short novel, intended for elementary age children. Set in 1291, it retells the story of William Tell and the Swiss revolt against Austria.
  • The Red Towers of Granada by Geoffrey Trease is an exciting adventure story set in 13th century Europe. The main character is a Christian boy who is mistakenly diagnosed with leprosy and exiled from his home village. He encounters a Jewish family that helps him out. The readers get a glimpse of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim life in Middle Ages.
  • The Kite Fighters by Linda Sue Park is less known than The Single Shard by the same author, but my children and I enjoyed it just as much. Set in medieval Korea, it’s an engaging story about two brothers who love kites.
  • The Man Who Counted: A Collection of Mathematical Adventures by Malba Tahan teaches both history and math. The characters travel through Arabia and use math to overcome the obstacles they encounter.

Hope you enjoy these! Book recommendations for the Renaissance time period coming soon – stay tuned!
