This week, we continue our conversation about learning history through literature with book recommendations for the Renaissance time period.
- Fine Print: A Story about Johann Gutenberg by Joann Johansen Burch is an engaging fictionalized biography of Johann Gutenberg, for ages 9 and up.
- A Ceiling Made of Eggshells by Gail Carson Levine is set in 15th century Spain and portrays the events leading to the expulsion of Jews from Spain, through the eyes of a Jewish girl. For middle grade readers.
- Out of Many Waters and its sequel, One Foot Ashore, by Jacqueline Greene also features Jewish girls as main characters, but their story begins in South America in the 17th century. The novels present an original picture of the Inquisition and its activities beyond Spain. For middle grade readers.
- Doctor Paracelsus by Sidney Rosen would be especially of interest to children who are fascinated by medicine. Along with the story of the famous doctor, the readers learn about the development of medicine in the Renaissance era. For teens. A better known book by the same author, set in this time period, is Galileo and the Magic Numbers.
- Blood on the River: James Town, 1607 by Elisa Carbone tells the story of the founding of James Town from the point of view of an orphan boy from London who joins Captain John Smith’s voyage. For middle grade readers.
Hope you enjoy these! Book recommendations for the Modern time period coming soon – stay tuned!
